Matcha is a type of green tea made by stone-milling whole, shade-grown tea leaves into a fine powder. Unlike regular tea where you steep leaves and discard them, matcha dissolves entirely into your drink, meaning you get the full benefit of the leaf in every sip. It has been a staple of Japanese culture for centuries and is now one of the fastest-growing drinks in the world.
Good ceremonial matcha is smooth, naturally sweet, and savory (umami). Never bitter. The bitterness people sometimes associate with matcha usually comes from lower-grade powder, water that is too hot, or too much powder in the cup. Our matcha is designed to taste great with just water, and even better as a latte.
No. A small electric frother works great if you have one. If you want the traditional experience, a bamboo whisk and matcha bowl are a nice addition, but they are not required. You can even shake matcha with cold water in a mason jar for a quick iced version.
Yes. Matcha naturally contains caffeine, typically around 30 to 50mg per serving, which is roughly half the amount in a standard cup of coffee. It also contains L-theanine, an amino acid naturally found in green tea.
Probably not. Most commercial matcha drinks are made with pre-sweetened powder that is often lower grade and blended with sugar. Our matcha is pure ceremonial-grade powder with nothing added. When you taste them side by side, the difference is clear.
